In 2008, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties received national recognition from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.  Among 400 agencies nationwide, this agency received the Gold Standard Award for pace setting performance in quality growth and increased revenue, and in the small market category, the Board of Trustees were finalists for Board of the Year.  Donna Bennett, the President/CEO received the CEO of the Year Award. 

These honors are the result of relentless teamwork.  Together, the professional staff and volunteer board have made it possible for 434 volunteers to become Big Brothers or Big Sisters to children who simply need a friend.  Those volunteers take time out of their busy lives to spend a few magical moments each month with a deserving child.  Here are a few stories about how mentoring can change the lives of children, parents, and volunteers.

  Your program has impacted our family significantly.  It has supplied us with school materials and holiday gifts when needed the most, during tough times.  Being a part of a single parent home, some children aren't as fortunate as others in dual parent families in regards to social and academic support.  Your program has helped fill that void in many ways.  My son enjoys every moment with his Big Sister.

When I am having a bad day, my Little Brother gives me a big smile and it turns my day around.  I want to be there when my Little Brother graduates and gets married.   I am so proud to be a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

She has taught me to be a better person.  When I'm down, she is always there for me.  She always tells me how lucky we are to have each other and that we need to, in turn, help other people who aren't so lucky.
